How Science in 19th and Early 20th Centuries Affected Freud's Ideas
The ideas of Freud were greatly affected by the influences from many pieces of technology and scientists in his times. During much of Freud's life, the dominant technology was steam power. Steam was very common in back then as how computer is nowadays. Hermann von Helmholtz -- the person who introduced the theory of conservation of energy -- was one of the scientists who greatly influenced Freud. In his theory, Helmholtz stated that energy can neither be created nor destroyed. From here, Freud found out that human are driven by “psychic energy”. Moreover, Freud was able to adapt the theories of thermodynamics to explain his theories of psychodynamics. He theorized that human personality is divided into three parts, the id, ego, and superego. Freud had well described his theories by using the analogy of thermodynamics – he mainly compared to id, ego, and superego to the systems of steam engines which include fire, water, and steam. On the other hand, Charles Darwin’s ideas had also been a great influence to Freud’s theories. Through law of nature, Darwin showed that man is a part of nature world. Therefore, it could be studied scientifically. By looking back at the theory of evolution, we can see many several similarities in Freud’s theories of psychodynamics. For example, Darwin suggested adaptation – the change in organisms in order to suit better in the environment -- in his theory while Freud introduced ego – human personality that changed social condition -- in the psychodynamics.

I have also learned how the great scientific advances and development in technology influenced Freud positively, and sparked his ideas about the psychic energy drive and parts of the personality.

I think it was very helpful for Freud to adopt ideas from other people and improve his theories. Great summary and thanks for info.

Understanding the technology of that time certainly helps to understand why Freud thinks the way he does. It's interesting to learn that he includes the mechanics of steam engine into his study.

you did a very good comparison on the ideas of freud and the steam engine. gave great examples of scientific development and how it influenced freuds ideas.

Freud wanted to be respected. As a result I feel that he needed science put some mass in his theories. However using other people's ideas to strenghten yours, it made Freud's idea more acceptable.

ur presentation was very good and new info was presented~ really enjoy it ^^
the idea about id, ego, and superego is easily seen when u compare it to the steam engines.
ur blog has many info that will be very useful for all of us

I agree that the steam power was a very powerful invention in Freud's lifetime. Id, ego and superego are quite famous theories nowadays and it's great to hear how it came to be.

Well, after all, science is science, so why can't psychology be linked to the idea from other branches of science, right? Freud, after all, is the scientist as well. So, Darwin's theory of evolution and Hemholtz's laws of conservation of energy, why can't they be applied to psychology? Very good comparison. ^^

Since I did this project with you, I already know a lot of these informations. However it is always interesting to learn somethine you didn't mentioned in our powerpoint such as human are driven by our "physic energy". Nice summary and info.
